John-Manuel Andriote began reporting on HIV-AIDS in 1986 while working on a master’s degree in journalism at Northwestern University. For 20 years, Andriote reported on HIV-AIDS as a Washington, DC-based health journalist. In 1999 Kirkus Reviews called his award-winning book Victory Deferred: How AIDS Changed Gay Life in America, “The most important AIDS chronicle since Randy Shilts’ And the Band Played On.”
